Is your hair breaking???

You wake up one morning to see your hair on your pillow😱. Okay that’s an But if you realize your hair is breaking than usual and shedding more than it should, then that’s a problem. This means your hair is dry and lacks moisture and protein. This usually happens when you take out your braids or weaves and have split ends.  If you are trying to retain your length or increase your hair length you shouldn’t let this happen.  If it does, don’t just sit down and think it’s normal, take action!

Our hair usually loses its moisture that’s why it’s very important for us to inculcating the habit of moisturizing our hair daily especially since we are entering the colder and dryer season. Lack of protein in your hair can also cause your hair to break because your hair becomes very dry and frizzy which can cause your hair to shed more than it should.

I recommend 3 main remedies for hair breakage;

  1. THE HOT OIL TREATMENT: This oils helps to seal in the moisture in your hair after you shampoo and condition. Heat up the oil of your choice in hot water or in a microwave and apply to your hair, Cover with a plastic cap. Do this the day before or 30 minutes to an hour before bathing. Shampoo and deep condition after.
  2. PROTEIN TREATMENT: You need to repair your hair by adding more protein to it. Do the egg+olive oil+honey treatment or other protein treatments (see previous post on DIY protein treatment). Leave in your hair for about an hour and shampoo and deep condition. You should do this every 4-6 weeks to repair broken hair.
  3. VITAMIN E TREATMENT: Vitamin E is very essential for hair, skin and nails. It should come as no surprise that you can actually use Vitamin E oil to repair your broken hair. Just break open 5 to 6 vitamin E capsules and add to your shampoo. This will prevent your hair from breaking.

These are very simple remedies to repair your broken hair. However, when you notice you have split ends trim them. don’t wait till it gets bad. Also, when you take out your braids or weaves, do a hot oil treatment or a protein treatment. Your natural hair always looks better when its healthy and moisturized. Thanks for reading this! Merry Christmas in advance🎄

So my hair started to look so dry with a lot of single strand knots and I knew it was time for my protein treatment. After all it had been 5 weeks since my last protein treatment.

Hair is largely composed of Keratin, a protein made up of amino acids. In order to grow new hair, your body must produce more amino acids, which it can only do from consuming protein. Doing a protein treatment every 4-6 weeks helps in your natural hair growth since your hair needs some amount of protein to grow and look healthy.

  • Helps with hair growth
  • Leaves her looking shiny and moisturized
  • Strengthens dry and brittle hair
  • Temporarily mends split ends
  • Treats damage from heat styling

There are a lot of DIY protein treatments you can use for your hair. Use what you have in your kitchen.  I, however used  Egg+Mayo+Honey+Olive oil

Before protein treatment

Mix 1 egg with 10 tablespoons of Mayonnaise(you can use more or less depending on the length of your hair). Add 2 table spoons of olive oil and 4 table spoons of honey. Mix together to form a nice paste. (I know it smells really bad but Don’t taste it!!)

  • Section your hair into 4 sections.
  • Put the mixture in your hair. Starting fromthe roots to tips. Especially tips. Your tips can really get really dry and that’s where you get the knots. Twist it when you are done.
  • Do same to all sections.
  • Cover your hair with a plastic bag and Let it sit in for 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Rinse your hair with cold water. (Don’t use warm water because It can cause the egg to cook up in your hair)
  • Shampoo your hair. This time I used the Shea moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Shampoo. It smells really good but doesn’t lather easily. This shouldn’t be a worry since you don’t need the shampoo to lather in your hair before you know it’s actually good. Just use enough to make your hair clean.
  • Rinse with warm water
  • Deep condition your hair with the Dhea moisture JBCO  Hair Mask and leave to sit in hair for 15 minutes
  • Rinse with cold water.  the 2 pictures above are  just after my wash. I have no products in yet. The protein treatment and the JBCO hair mask left my hair so soft, shiny, curly and moisturized as seen.
  • Apply your Leave-in, oil and cream and style your hair as preferred I had a wedding to attend so I left my hair to air dry and styled it this way

Products used

  • Shea moisture Coconut and hibiscus Shampoo
  • Shea Moisture JBCO hair mask
  • Curls and Naturals Leave-in conditioner
  • Olive oil
  • Shea moisture Coconut and Hibiscus  Curl smoothie

img_0840-1If you are a naturalista you’ve probably heard of the LOC method and the LCO method. If not, this is simply LIQUID(L), OIL(O) AND CREAM(C) or LIQUID(L), CREAM(C), OIL(O) which are the steps used after shampooing and conditioning. Sometimes, no! Most of the time many of us get confused as to which method is best for our hair since there have been a lot of articles as to which method is best for which hair type. I am still confused myself. But as I always say- “Do what best works for your hair”. I personally use the LOC method (which I actually just realized since I never really pay attention to it) and it works for my hair. Your hair might work better with the LCO method. All you have to do is try it.

So, in order to understand this better we’ve got to know how all this LOC or LCO helps our hair then you can choose which method suits best for your hair.img_0856-1

L- this can be either water or a water-based leave-in conditioner. Water is best used to add moisture to the hair. Water should be your best friend. For added moisture, use a water based Leave-in Conditioner.

OThe oil acts as a moisturizer and sealant. It seals in the moisture. Examples are Coconut oil, Olive oil, Avocado oil. Some oils act as just sealants and these are best used when using the LCO METHOD. Eg Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Jamaican Black Castor oil

CThis cream can be a whipped cream, curl enhancing smoothie or shea butter. This also adds moisture and also seals the hair cuticles.

If using the LCO method, You use the Cream before your oil which should be a sealing oil. img_0857-1

If your hair is constantly dry, I will recommend using the LCO method since the Oil acts as a final sealant and seals in the moisture from the leave-in and Cream.

Please comment below on which method worked best on your hair… Thanks guys  Thumbs up!!!!
